May 24, 2012 – Vespers Service

Many thanks to Dutch Neck Presbyterian Church, which hosted tonight’s Vespers Service.  We started by enjoying springtime in the back yard – especially nice given the pouring rain that had fallen earlier in the day.  Our pergola is up and there are five raised cedar beds (with more to come!).  David gave a preview of what our community garden may look like.  Dinner featured delicious Lebanese beef fillo rolls, which Peggy had made for us, plus lots of salad, berries, and brownies.  After dinner Bill led a Lectio Divina (divine reading) of Colossians 3:12-16.  We shared what words and phrases touched us and closed with prayer.

May 5, 2012 – Cinco de Mayo

Today we hosted the first Cinco de Mayo party at Bethany House!  Jacque had mentioned having a pig roast to open the community garden, and he ordered one from TC at Trenton Social.  TC went above and beyond with a fabulous spread of tender pork loin, savory pulled pork, amazing baked beans (with bacon), and spinach, plus hamburgers and hot dogs.  We stuffed ourselves and then celebrated Amy’s birthday with a surprise Carvel ice cream cake (which actually is a family tradition!).  Amy’s family, including her 91-year-old grandmother and her sister, came down to Trenton for the festivities and appreciated the hospitality of Bethany House.

Out and about in April

April was less rainy than usual, and the flowers came early this year!  The cherry trees in Trenton (especially outside the Richard J. Hughes Justice Complex on Market Street) were gorgeous during the middle of the month.  At Bethany House, the back yard has been tilled in preparation for the community garden, and we are excited about beginning to plant in May.

On Thursday, April 12, the Reverend Patti Daley hosted our Vespers Service.

On Thursday, April 19, we had a “Sunday family dinner” thanks to Liz from The Presbyterian Church of Lawrenceville (established in 1698!).  She brought a feast (including cowboy casserole, which was yummy) and shared with us what it was like growing up in Mercer County.  Liz is a retired teacher who volunteers with The Crisis Ministry and the Get SET after-school program at Westminster Presbyterian Church, so there was only one degree of separation between us!

On Tuesday, April 24, five pastors from Amy’s church (Pilgrim Church) came to visit Trenton and Bethany House.  We had lunch at DeLorenzo’s Pizza and spent some time catching up in our living room.
